stare at the walls of my cell
curse and spit and count the tiles on the floor
flashbacks on my mind are hell
nothin’ to do but wait around till the warden says it’s my turn to go
wouldn’t that be swell

I wonder how in this whole mess
I ended up in jail
I guess sometimes reason doesn’t rhyme
things fall apart and when it rains it hails
nothin’ to do but chalk it up to fate and my famous luck,
it never fails

But I don’t deserve to be chained down here
my spirit should be flying free
and in my heart I know the real cage
is the things that lovin’ you
does to me

I run around in circles
I’m a fool for all to see
it’s your indecision and silly games
that really keeps me in captivity
nothin’ to do but wait for you and see if you will still be true
you’re killing me

I wonder why in this whole mess

I guess by now most other guys
would’ve gotten wise to your manic ways and flew
nothin’ to do but move along, try my best, keep pressin’ on,

The rays of the sun don’t really shine
when there’s a rain cloud over your head
