Town of Song 04:46
Town of Song I run everything I own into the ground this austerity program is getting me down I think I’ve stayed too long in the town of song I should move along from the town of song or should I stick around this piece of ground around the town of song, where I belong? I see a younger man with cold hard stares money-stained hands and savoir faire I hear a simple groove with a lightening tongue the words are slung and never sung with the pretty girls, it’s all complete how can a simple song like this compete? I hear a siren screaming in the night a twinge of fear is bottled tight but there are no tears when you realize all you’ve got is your disguise so make it work where you belong even if it’s in the town of song I run everything I own into the ground this austerity program is getting me down I think I’ve stayed too long in the town of song I should move along from this town of song or should I stick around this piece of ground around the town of song where I belong? So, I guess I’ll keep writing until the day I die though no one hears the words I sigh it doesn’t bother me, I lie and I’ll work until the day’s gone by morning comes and evening goes, away the highs and say hello, another day has come, it’s time to go to the town of song

When You Were Real I had a dream and she looked a lot like you I had a dream and she tasted just like you I had a dream and she screamed just like you I had a dream and she had me just the way that I had you When you were real when I could feel back before when you had me and I had you and everything was new and full of zeal back when you were real I had a dream or did the dream have me I had a dream who woke me suddenly I have these memories and lies only I can see I had these dreams or were they wishes wished away carelessly Back when you were real when I could feel back before when you had me and I had you and everything was new and full of zeal Back when you were real when I could feel back before when I was me and I found you and everything was new and full of zeal

Hell On My Mind A forgotten youth sprayin’ on the side of the building marking off territory he thinks he owns but, he’s just doin’ time before he checks in to the big house hotel, he’ll call home Is it my fault, I say no is it my blame, I say no is it my job, I don’t know I’ve got my own hell on my mind An old man dies, his memories shared with no one they met and married long before the bomb a wasted dream he shared, until she died now his eyes are lonely, sort of calm But, is it my fault, I say no is it my blame, I say no is it my job, I don’t know I’ve got my own hell on my mind My lack of time my own confines peace, I can’t find yet, I stand in line behind the others and their signs with just my rhyme Earth she wastes while we lease she’ll spin on a shell, while we decease she’s raped and beat and poisoned and diseased before she dies, she’ll kill the human beast Is it my fault, watch it go is it my blame because I know is it my job, I can’t slow I’ve got my own hell on my mind hell on my mind

Breeze and the Sun I wanna sail in the breeze I wanna bake in the sun I wanna make believe I don’t owe anyone I wanna stare at the trees I wanna die from the fun I wanna get off my knees and get into a run but I can’t run, they’ll come for me I can’t relax, ‘cause I’m not free to enjoy all that I see I wanna sit on the porch and watch the sun go down I wanna burn the torch to hear the nightly sounds I wanna clear my mind I wanna cleanse my thoughts I wanna leave behind the wares I’ve bought but I can’t run, I’m here to stay and all the fun has gone away with the smiles of younger days I’m just an actor in a play I’m just an actor anyway I’m just an actor everyday

Rolling The Dice From the start I knew I could and I knew I should, so I wandered down this lonely, ill-kept road I never dreamed that I would fail or that the dream would ever turn so pale and carry such a load it’s always been a mystery, this sideways run through history, half the time, I’m half asleep running endlessly, then stopping, walking, hopping, never finding steady ground to make my leap my whole life has been a roll of the dice my whole life I’ve been rolling the dice I’ve always dreamed there was a vision underneath this indecision, lacking reason, finding rhyme thinking songs provide an answer, maybe only for a dancer never worried about the time believing pictures that you paint are grand, when, given proudly to the money man who hands them back to you you realize again you do it only for yourself, my friend there’s life in what you do and my whole life has been a roll of the dice my whole life I’ve been rolling the dice and I roll my soul throw it out into the cold From the start I thought I was, simply because I believed, and this alone, would make it so now I’m not so crystal clear but, I’m the captain, I must steer I’ve got passengers in tow with this knowledge, gold becomes the reason instead, I sing this song of treason as if to scream aloud that I’m still here I don’t believe there is an answer for the singer or the dancer only meaning in the footsteps and the tears and my whole life has been a roll of the dice my whole life I’ve been rolling the dice

I Can't Let Another Day Go By chorus: I can’t let another day go by I can’t let another season simply fly I can’t let another moment pass me by without bothering to try, finding reasons or asking why should I, let another day go by One day the fallout follows you home, the day you fall down and strain the life that lingers to get up and move around, can’t fall back down repeat chorus: One day the river washes away the ground you’ve prayed on and all the trappings you have displayed have floated on, but you must stay One day the light that guides your spirit leads you into shades of gray where color is a desert rain, happiness, a drink away One day the fallout follows you home, the day you fall down survival orders you to awake, move around, and not fall back down Repeat chorus:

Eternity 02:52
Eternity Said the babe to the frog, give me kisses said the babe to the frog, give me tongue said the frog to the babe, as you wishes and then, pow! said the prince to the babe, here I come Said the dad to the mom, where’s my life gone said the dad to the mom, how long’s it been said the mom to the dad, where’s my kisses said the mom to the stud, here I come Said the grandma to the grandpa, remember young love said the grandma to the grandpa, how long’s it been said the grandpa to the grandma, whatever you say dear said the grandpa to the chair, eternity Said the woman to the man, eternity said the man, oh yes, I guess, less certainly said the woman to the man, as she smiled and held his hand, we’ll be together until forever, eternity Said the man to the woman I’ll give you kisses said the man to desire, anything said the man to the woman, words untrue, he can’t undo only you, will I pursue for eternity only you, will I pursue for eternity Said the babe to the frog, give me kisses said the babe to the frog, hop over here said the frog to the babe as you wishes, and then pow! said the prince to the babe, what in the hell ever happened to my pond?

Darkest Dreams I want you completely I feel what you feel I want all you conceal in the dark of your darkest dreams I crave all that you do I see what you see I dream of you only in the dark of your darkest dreams I hear your lonely cry and I don’t believe your alibi because I’m hear at your side your eyes are far away you’re a cat that never strays you’re gone, yet you stay I see through the hazes I’ve walked passed the rain I feel all of your pain in the dark of your darkest tears I’ll lead when you falter and follow, while you lead I’ll bleed all that you bleed but, in the dark of my darkest fears I cry out but you don’t hear you turn away, then disappear please don’t leave me standing here in the dark of my darkest fears I hear your lonely cry and I don’t believe your alibi because I’m here by your side Your eyes are far away you’re a cat that never strays you’re gone and yet, you stay in the dark of my darkest dreams

In Paradox 03:59
In Paradox You weaken me put a chink in the armor I could fall to a crossbow ‘cause, you weaken me You tame me like a falcon, I return always back to your waiting arm you tame me There in lies the joy and there in lies the worth for there lies meaning for the man there in lies the hope so, there in lies the strength for there lies meaning to the man You save me shelter me from the downpour feed my soul from your own core you save me There in lies the joy and there in lies the worth for there lies meaning for the man there in lies the hope so, there in lies the strength for there lies meaning to the man

Let It Go 03:56
Let It Go To be so strong, all along crawling sightless to a grave, make a cut and ease the flow, let it go To be so wise and hypnotized, compliant shuffling to an end, make a hole, release the soul, let it go In every car that stands before me, frustration, rage and fear even though the best that’s ever been is everything that’s here a tick away from crumbling, this mighty wall of sand, the meaning rests it’s case within my hands, still I’ll take a pill, release the thrill, let it spill breathe in slow, ease the flow and let it go Be so kind and push rewind, fix these holes within my soul where nothing lives and nothing gives, only the blood is positive or take me high and let me fly, let me go The emptiness is overflowing my hands are in the air, though my eyes are filled with consequence, what you’ll see is my vacant stare a breath away from crumbling, this mighty wall of man, the meaning rests it’s case within my hands, still I’ll take a pill, release the thrill and let it spill breathe in slow, ease the flow and let it go

A Laughing Cry Leave it as you found it before you were there leave me as you find me I’ll keep my hands behind me and keep it all inside of me I see a laughing cry in a passing sky and I wave goodbye Is there fun behind it all the race to nowhere, then the call crashing, flaming, diving, a whale beached, is crying a balanced rock that will not fall I see a laughing cry in a passing sky and I wave goodbye, then I close my eyes and I feel the night and I wave goodbye Everything’s become so real I long for how I used to feel lying by the water in the sun waiting for the fun now everything’s become so real I see a laughing cry in a passing sky and I wave goodbye, then I close my eyes and I feel the night and I wave goodbye with a laughing cry

Somewhere Else Can you tell me what I’m thinkin’ baby can you tell me where I’ve been can you tell me what you’re thinkin’ baby can you tell me where you’ve been you and I went our separate ways how the hell did we get back together again can you tell me what you’re thinkin’ baby Give me blue skies and give me freedom and give me roads I ain’t walked or driven on give me new love or give me no love but, give me something, nothing or everything that I ain’t seen before get me out of here Can you tell me where the hell am I can you tell how I got here can you tell me where the schedule is I’m late, I’m late I fear can you tell me where the hell’s my hair gone and why it seems so hard to breathe how can you know just where I’m going when I don’t know where I’ve been Give me blue skies and give me freedom and give me roads I ain’t walked or driven on give me new love or give me no love but, give me something, nothing or anything that I ain’t seen before somewhere else

about

Dancing with Ghosts (2001) by The Runes was the second release of what turned out to be five. Dancing with Ghosts was conceptual in nature and the songs flow in style and theme. It was a real departure from the live performance based sound of Lost Songs. No one knew what the end result was going to be when they created and recorded their parts.
Partial list of the songs: When You Were Real, Darkest Dreams, Rolling the Dice, Town of Song and Somewhere Else
