Closer To Texas

Closer to Texas
I left my love down in Austin
'cause she said I had to go
to find that place I've always dreamed of
and the reasons I must roam
but there's a million miles of heartache
between this peak and San Anton
and there's a billion beds to sleep in
but there's only one home
I'm getting closer to Texas
I'm getting closer to home
with every mile under my belt
I feel a lot less alone
I had to leave her to find her
she's in my heart and in my bones
I'm getting closer to Texas
this wayward son is coming home
I love this country and it's cities and it's people
I love the water and the land
from Port Aransas to Chicago
from Solvang to Rhode Island
and as pleasing as the view is
from Walden woods to canyon's grand
these tired feet and heart are longing
for Texas air and Texas dirt
with Texas water on my lips
and my love by the hand
I'm close enough to taste it
and starting to believe
returning is the reason
for the yearning to leave
Closer to Texas
Closer to Texas
Closer to Texas
she's singing to me like a song
I had to leave her to find her
but she was with me all along
I'm getting close to Texas
this wayward son is coming home
I'm getting closer to Texas
this Texas man is finally home

I Should Know Me (Better Than That By Now)
I was just thinking as I was drinking
that I could be much more than this
It’s a decision, based on a vision
of a poor man, suddenly rich
I was scheming or was I dreaming
that a beauty came my way
I was a giant and I had clients
and things had surely gone my way
I should know me
let the truth be
I ain’t goin’ nowhere now
there’s no calm sea
and no free me
I should no me
better than that by now
I stopped my cryin’ and started tryin’
like I could see the light of day
But, all my thinkin’ got me to drinkin’
until the day had passed away
repeat chorus
I should know my feet are on the ground
I should know my way around this town
I should know my heart can still be found
with you
How did I get here, drowning in cheap beer
it’s all me, still I blame you
you left me moping, time I started coping
I think one day I’ll start anew
repeat chorus

Last Days

Last Days
I try to enjoy every taste and excess
celebrate every moment of breath
appreciate all of the comforts of what is our home
on these, the last days of Rome
our wealth was created on a house of cards
the system was built to implode and discard
as if the charges were laid in the walls of our homes
set to explode on the last days of Rome
we still jeer and we cheer at our stadium games
but our shekels are no longer valuable exchange
the cost of our bread soars higher and higher and higher
‘til there’s no fuel for the fire
we’ve seen all of our hopes and our dreams vaporize
like black magic performed for our TV strained eyes
we toss all our freedoms to burn on a funeral pyre
on these, the last days of the empire
we look down on the beggars who sorely need love
we look to see we’ve been sprayed from above
the cameras are watching,
they track all our thoughts through our phones
on these, the last days of Rome
and men behind curtains dictate the decline
as the fall will bring chaos and order by design
where once the free and the brave made a home
what remains for us now are these, the last days of Rome
free men cut down by a drone
the last days of Rome
freedom left standing alone
on the last days of Rome

What Once Was

What Once Was
while everything crumbles
while everything fails
when everything crumbles
I’ll be blowing on sails
I moan and grumble
and float this boat without a breeze
and then up from another stumble
I’ll add my warm breath to the cold freeze
while everything crumbles
everything’s shattered
everything’s smashed
what was whole and precious
is broken and cashed
everything’s shattered
our best days all passed
our future’s in tatters
the dye’s been cast
and everything’s shattered
what once was
we are all a part of it
what once was
everything’s shattered
what once was
we are all a part of it
everything’s shattered
what once was
we are all a part of it
everything’s shattered

Ghosts and Shadows

Ghosts and Shadows
why did you leave me here?
why did you fly this empty room?
where the city lights seep through my window
forming ghosts and shadows
of faded gray and blue
why did this city change?
why did the music die and leave a tomb?
and these barren walls, now sad reminders
just ghosts and shadows
of faded gray and blue
why did the fates step in?
why did your spirit fly and leave this gloom?
and these aching notes won’t help me find you
in the ghosts and shadows
of faded gray and blue
ghosts and shadows,
haunting visions
of you
